Read the roof deck after the winter
Spokane averages 44 to 45 inches of snow a year, going by the 1991 to 2020 normals at the airport, and every winter some of it turns into ice dams. Heat leaks through the ceiling, melts the snow on the deck, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold eaves and backs up under the shingles. The stain appears on the underside of the deck near the eaves, often months later, after the storm that caused it is forgotten.
The late January 2026 storm, five days of snow, ice and hard freezing across the region, is the kind of week that starts these. If your attic has not been looked at since then, that is the first place we point the light.
Trace every fan and vent to its end
Bathroom fans in older Spokane houses often end in the insulation instead of outside.
