Why does the house smell musty by February when the windows have been shut since October? Air quality testing in Spokane, WA puts a number on it: a pump draws a measured volume of air through a cassette in each room, an accredited third party lab counts and identifies the mold spores, and you see how the inside compares with the outside.
This is a mold test. We do not measure radon, smoke particles or chemical fumes, and we say so up front so nobody buys the wrong test. What you get is a written spore count per cubic meter for each zone, the genus or species found, and a plain explanation of what it means.

Why is indoor air at its worst in a Spokane winter?
Three things line up from December to February. The furnace has been recirculating the same air since October. January is Spokane's most humid month by average relative humidity, roughly double the summer low, and a closed house holds whatever showers and cooking add to that. And the valley's winter inversions park still, cold air over the city for days at a time, which the Spokane Clean Air Agency describes as the poorest stretch of the year for outdoor air.
Cold surfaces, humid air and little air exchange are the conditions mold needs. A window frame in a 1920s Browne's Addition house or a north wall in a Hillyard rental shows it first, and an air sample often picks it up before you see it.
Does wildfire smoke change the result?
It changes the house. Over the summers of 2020 to 2025 the Spokane region averaged about six days a year of unhealthy air from wildfire smoke, with the worst recent days in September. The advice on those days is to shut the windows, set the HVAC to recirculate and run filtration continuously, which means a week or more of a sealed house right before October turns damp.
The test itself counts mold spores, not smoke. We take the outdoor baseline on the same day, so a September sample is compared with September air rather than a clear day in May.
What about a tight new home in Liberty Lake or Post Falls?
Kootenai County keeps adding homes faster than almost anywhere else in North Idaho, with building still running in Post Falls, Hayden and Rathdrum. A house built to today's energy standards is sealed far tighter than a Spokane Valley ranch from 1962. That saves on heating, and it also keeps the moisture from every shower and pot of pasta indoors unless the ventilation was designed to move it. A new house and a musty smell are not a contradiction.
What does the report tell me, and what happens next?
Spore counts per cubic meter for each zone, the genus or species, the outdoor comparison and our reading of it. If the counts are in line with outdoors, that is the end of it. If a zone is high, the moisture readings we took alongside usually explain why.
Where the ducts are involved, HVAC mold removal is the next step, because the VaPURE process reaches the ducting and the air itself as well as the surface you can see. The home is vacant while that treatment runs, everyone out including pets and plants, and most families are home again that evening.
Is radon part of an air quality test?
No, and it belongs on your list anyway. The EPA maps Spokane County in Radon Zone 1, its highest tier, and the measured average indoor level in the county, 5.8 pCi/L, sits above the EPA action level of 4. Kootenai County is Zone 1 as well. Radon is a separate test with separate equipment, done by a radon tester. We do mold. Do both, and keep both reports with the house.

No. The lab counts mold spores, and a mold cassette does not measure smoke particles. If the house smelled of smoke for a week in September and musty by November, the second part is what we test.
Enough to answer the question. A typical house gets a basement sample, a main floor sample and an outdoor baseline, plus any room with a known leak or a smell. We agree the list with you before we start.
It helps. A count tells you whether the problem is spores in the air or moisture in a wall, and a purifier does nothing for the second.
Winter, if you can. A closed up January house shows its real numbers. A July test with the windows open mostly tells you about the yard.
