Follow the air, not the stain
Mold in an HVAC system rarely shows itself. What you notice is a musty smell when the furnace first kicks on, worse in one room than another, or a family that feels worse at home than away. The source is usually somewhere along the run: a supply duct through a damp crawl space, the return plenum, the air conditioner's coil and drain pan, or the blower housing.

Count the days the windows stay shut
Spokane Clean Air's tally for 2020 to 2025 works out to roughly a week of unhealthy smoke days each summer, most of them landing in September. The local guidance for those days is to keep windows and doors shut, set the HVAC to recirculate, and run a MERV-13 filter without stopping. That is sound advice, and it means the house runs closed with a filter loaded with smoke particulate through the end of summer.
Then the cold arrives and the windows stay shut for a different reason. Winter inversions trap air in the Spokane valley from December to February, the stillest and dampest stretch of the year indoors. Six months of recirculated air through one set of ducts is a long time for anything growing in there.
