Shower mold removal in Spokane, WA is a January job more than any other month, because January is on average the most humid month of Spokane's year and the shower is the wettest room in the house. Outside it is in the twenties. Inside, the shower runs several times a day with the windows shut, the furnace on, and the tile still cold. Grout is porous and the wall behind it is wet
Tile sheds water. Grout drinks it. Once the sealer on a grout line wears off, each shower pushes water a little further into the joint and the backer board or plaster behind it, and the black line along the bottom row of tile is the surface of a colony that has already reached the wall. Scrubbing takes the top off. The rest is behind the tile, in the dark, wet twice a day.
Older Spokane bathrooms make this worse: tile set on a mud bed or plaster, original caulk gone hard, and a window in the shower wall that sweats on cold mornings.
A closed-up house feeds it in two seasons
December and January are the two most humid months Spokane gets, and they are also two of the coldest, so the bathroom window stays shut and the fan, if there is one, runs for the length of a shower and no longer. The steam has nowhere to go but the tile, the ceiling, and the grout. Late summer does the same thing for a different reason. The Spokane region has averaged about six days of unhealthy air a summer from wildfire smoke since 2020, by the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency's count, and the advice on those days is to keep windows and doors closed and run the HVAC on recirculate. Caulk, sealer, and the fan decide whether it stays away
Treatment handles what is there. Whether it stays away depends on the room drying out between uses. Fresh caulk at the tub seam, sealed grout, a squeegee after the shower, and a fan that keeps running after you get out will do most of that. If the shower has a window, cracking it on a mild day helps; in January it will not be open, so the fan matters more. We tell you which of those your shower needs.
